First Ever Make-Your-Own KitKat Chocolatory is here in Tokyo!

Posted on November 12, 2020

Although the cherished KitKat originally hails from the UK, KitKat lovers worldwide seem to always flock to Japan where KitKat flavors continue to challenge KitKat boundaries time and time again. Japan is famous for its incredible selection of unique and rare KitKat flavors with over 400 flavors, including cherry blossom, wasabi, and sake. It is no surprise then that the world’s first make-your-own KitKat store has opened up right in the heart of Tokyo. Shibuya’s Miyashita Park is a hip, new building that is home to many fancy eateries including the KitKat Chocolatory that marked its opening on August 4, 2020. Boasting special limited edition flavors, crepe KitKat waffles, and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create your own personalized KitKat, this KitKat Chocolatory is a must-do during your trip to Tokyo.

Welcome to the Make-Your-Own KitKat counter where you can design the KitKat of your dreams! MyKitKat sessions are held at specific times everyday and cost approximately 2,000 yen for the 70 minute guide-led session. We advise making reservations online in advance or at least earlier on the day you want to participate as there is a cap at six people per session.

Here, at the counter, you will select your preferred type of chocolate between milk, dark, and ruby (which is more like raspberry). And as you can see, there is a wide array of toppings to choose from—19 to be exact!

You’ll have to come to the painstaking decision of choosing which three of the 17 available toppings you would like to integrate into your customized KitKat. Funnily enough, these ‘toppings’ will end up being on the bottom of your KitKat. But why not take the liberty of making a visually pleasing design while you’re at it? You can adorn your KitKat with the ingredients above, but they also have fun toppings like marshmallow, pretzels, and edible flowers.

For the next step, you’ll pour the melted chocolate into KitKat mold. You’ll also have to cut the cookie wafers before placing them inside the chocolate filled mold. After that, you’ll omakase (leave it to) it to the KitKat Chocolatory staff who will refrigerate your precious concoction. The refrigerating process (30 minutes), followed by the packaging will leave you with some free time to explore the rest of Miyashita Park or use your free drink coupon that comes with your MyKitKat session!

And voilà! You’ll be presented with your one-of-a-kind KitKat in a special box that you have chosen from one of six box designs. If you’re a Japanophile like us here at Bikkuri Japan, you’ll probably love the Mount Fuji box design that they have.

Definitely take a moment to walk around the rest of the store while you’re there. The Chocolatory features exclusive fruit flavored KitKats including passionfruit and cacao fruit.

There’s no way you’ll miss it when you walk through Miyashita Park. Check out this epic wall art that they have going on outside the store!

And if you happen to have jazz hands or you simply love the spotlight, there is even a colorful KitKat piano in the middle of the store that anyone is welcome to play!
