From the ¥900 Nikka Black to the ¥15,750 Nikka Single Cask (they even have a 10 year anniversary bottle that sells for ¥79,521!), Nikka is sure to come to mind when you think of Japanese whiskey. If you’ve ever wondered how whiskey is made, why not visit their free distillery tour?
The Miyagikyo Distillery is Nikka’s second distillery, located in beautiful Sendai. It is an hour bus ride from Sendai station, but the distillery also offers free shuttle busses on weekends and holidays from the JR Sakunami Station.
Tours are offered every 30 minutes from 9AM to 3:30PM, and if you’re a group less than 10, you don’t even need a reservation! While the tour is given in Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese audio guides are also available for download. In addition, the tour is wheelchair accessible and family friendly.
The tour also offers a free tasting of whiskey, as well as a paid tasting if you’re interested in trying a whiskey flight. However, there are also soft drinks available for minors and others who cannot drink alcohol.
While they do not allow videos to be taken during the tour, they allow photography, so be sure to take plenty of pictures while you learn about the history of the company and Nikka Whisky!
Before the tour ends, be sure to stop by the gift shop to pick up souvenirs and your favorite Nikka bottle!
The Miyagikyo Distillery was built to contrast the original Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido, with unique distillation methods creating original malt whiskies; be sure to tour the Yoichi Distillery as well, and let us know the difference in the two distilleries!
